Meaning of Aviwe

By: Aviwe Ndyaluvane

Found interesting meanings of my name on-line this afternoon. Which gave me the idea to blog about the significant meaning our names have.

To begin with, according to my mother: she gave me the name, Aviwe, because I was born on Workers' Day- 1 May 1992. Which meant for the first time, after having given birth to 2 children before me, my father was present when my mother gave birth. 1992 is the time when Apartheid in South Africa still existed, therefore, maternity leave was granted to the mother alone. She gave me the name "Aviwe" thanking the Lord that her 'prayers' had been "answered". Thus, "Aviwe" means being "heard" or being "listened to".

Secondly, my mother had 2 sons before me, which meant spectacular news to my father. In African Tradition it is important that a man has a heir to take over from him. You are seen as being a 'real man' if your wife gives birth to a son as your first born child. Nonetheless, my mother always wanted a daughter....and finally after three babies she was blessed with one...me- "Aviwe", which then again means "your prayers have been answered"

Lastly, every Xhosa name has a greater context meaning than just being fixed in their family history or context. So, 1992 is the intermediate year between 1990- when Nelson Mandela was released from prison and 1994- when Apartheid was abolished in South Africa. So, at the time of 1992 many black South Africans were anticipating to see a new brighter chapter in their lives, a new constitution, after having been oppressed by White people (Apartheid Regime) for so many decades. 1600's are regarded as the "days of White Invasion" when Dutch settlers arrived in Cape Town (South Africa). The Khoi-khoi (the first inhabitants of Southern Africa) and Dutch had their first war in the 1800's (Dutch-Khoikhoi War). So, you can imagine the excitement my people, family and the whole black community had when Nelson Mandela was released from prison- because all what they had been striving for was near to them to grasp. Therefore, I was named 'Aviwe' because the Lord had finally 'heard our cry, our prayers' for freeing a black man from white oppression.

My Instagram photos and first halloween =D

By: Aviwe Ndyaluvane

So as you know I am on instagram as AviweAv_Ndyaluvane (sorry to disappoint you I don't have those sexy social networks names i.e. buttercup, sexymama et cetera- I go by my real name). Anyway, as the top picture shows this blog is basically to share my instagram photos and experiences with you as I know that not all of you guys are able to follow me on instagram. So, yes, allow me now to usher y'all into my daily experiences.

It was Halloween this Wednesday; my friends and I went costume shopping and I bumped into that guy :p. I'll admit this was my first ever Halloween experience; in South Africa we don't care about Halloween as we perceive it to be part of American culture. Back home you sometimes experience Halloween if you go to bars, some stores that sell Halloween stuff and of course primary school-they go all out; dress up and trick or treat. I found my outfit though- I was an Egyptian Gypsy...

Yessss... I was showing my entire thigh... I was pulling an Nothende at the SAMA's this year...

Nadia Kamil and Me....she was a baby bear =D
We stuffed our faces with food before partying... so South African... shame man our poor Singaporean friend...
Batman and a Gypsy.. perfect combination... No further photos shall be revealed- especially PARTY photos =D

My new venture in America- learning to play the Piano. Yes, you've guessed right-my fingers are stiff as hell. However, my instructor believes that I have potential =D. We'll see where this goes....

Look what I bought... and no I'm not holding up a toy-it's actually a cellphone cover...cute hey... Again don't get carried away- that's not an iPhone 5...its an iPhone4... I swear by the time I buy an iPhone 5- Apple will release an iPhone6 the next week... I couldn't even brag about it... Talk about practising your catwalk and have the light dimmed on you five seconds before you step in...

If there's one thing I forever cry about on Wednesdays...this is it... My drama class and best friend-Nasiphi Dlilanga.

On that topic (my 'past life')...look at this... That's my best friend Nasiphi Dingiswayo (I know what you're thinking 'Nasiphis' are stalking me). Ok, that was just mean...lol... Let's rephrase that- I tend to easily connect with Nasiphis...so if you're 'Nasiphi' come to me- you can never go wrong... We'll light up like a house on fire.

That's Unathi Bonga-the only Black person I know in here... I know!! It's funny how we are both from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and we met in America. We were there together last year, plus we are doing the same stream/major- BA Media Communication and Culture... Well I suppose the reason could be that she's third year and I'm just a second year student....

Just look at me...ahhh...no further comment

And you thought that's all I've got...look at this...Ok enough about this... Back to the real thing
Last one I promise... I just couldn't help it... But if you must know I am a hard worker two hey...
This when I was helping my Sri Lankan friend Chathu prepare for Sri Lankan Night. She and other fellow Sri Lankan's were going to exhibit their country to both domestic students and international students.

After all that hard work this is how I looked like... cool hey...

Oh this is healthy...it's made out of dry cucumber... Why don't we have these in South Africa???!!!

Now I can go on and on about which great photos to post or not...so just follow me on Instagram ;)

Language Apartheid In South Africa

By: Ndyalvane Aviwe
Language Apartheid Audio Trailor

As promised I have completed my audio trailor for Langauge Apartheid in South Africa. This is just a teaser of what I will be showing as well as discussing in the actual documentary. Unlike a visual trailor, an audio trailor uses the 'theatre of the mind' to convey message. Therefore, use your imagination as you listen to the audio trailor. It basically transitions from one next to another-however the the storyline is maintained throughout the audio trailor. The film will be clear and homogenous. Nonetheless, here's the trailor do enjoy and leave a comment.

Also, if you need further description of this audio trailor please read a blog I wrote about this four days ago
